Question / Help Getting a pretty big fps drop when opening OBS. Even bigger when I record.

Hey i'm currently having problems recording games with OBS. I'm mainly trying to record Minecraft and haven't tried recording other games yet. Usually when I start a Minecraft game I get around 68-110 frames per second. (Not the best.) But Whenever I open OBS then I get around 17-38 frames and when i'm recording I get around 8-23. I am also having a bit of trouble stopping recordings, when I click "stop recording" then it says "stopping recording..." and keeps saying that and I don't get the video. Just to let you know I am using a MacBook Pro with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB Graphics Thingy (I know almost nothing about these things.)

Please tell me if I need to change any settings or something. I attached my latest log file.

The version of OBS you are using is extremely old-- almost a year old. Even if the problem you are experiencing was due to a bug, it's quite possible that it was fixed somewhere between 16.0.2 and the current version (which is 19.0.3). If not, it is unlikely that any further updates would be issued to this branch in order to resolve an issue.

Further, the MacBook in question is also extremely old (almost 10 years) and OBS is extremely CPU-intensive. On MacOS, OBS does not utilize the GPU for encoding, so your CPU is doing all the work, and has only two cores to do it with.

I would not be at all surprised to get the framerate reduction you describe if I attempted to run OBS and recent versions of Minecraft on a Core 2 Duo.

I know that my laptop is old so my theory was that my computer was just a bit slow and I guess I was kinda right. I'll try downloading the 19.0.3 version of OBS and see if that works. Thanks for the info! If this doesn't work I guess I'll just get a better computer someday.

Does that older computer have any hardware encoding?

Newer computers have a hardware encoding. It is not as good as the software, but it doesn't consume CPU to use, and might help you.

That you have a real GPU and not just the built-in chip makes me think you've got a hardware encoder.

I don't have a clue. How would I check to see if I have hardware encoding? And also I tried the 19.0.3 version and it didn't really make a difference.
