Gameplay feels choppy when recording

I play a 2002 game in windowed mode, the game is capped at 60 fps with an external software, but when I record, it feels choppy and sometimes more like 30fps even though the framerate displayed is completely stable at 60. The recording is coming out smooth too.

I have almost nothing but the game and OBS running in the background, I have only one scene, the preview is disabled and the program minimized etc...

I have a RTX 3060Ti and a i5-11400F and my monitor is a 165Hz, should I put it at 60Hz when I'm playing ?

Yes on basis that video/audio stuff generally works "better" when there's no conversion involved in resolution/frame/refresh/sample rates. If still having issues, post a recording log. What game is it?

1. The Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling ("HAGS") feature added with Windows 10 is currently known to cause performance and capture issues with OBS, games and overlay tools. It's an experimental feature and we recommend disabling it via these instructions.
2. Enable "Game Mode" for maximum gaming performance. Game Mode can be enabled via the Windows 11 "Settings" app, under Gaming > Game Mode (leave DVR/Background DVR off).
3. Audio buffering hit the maximum value. This is an indicator of very high system load, will affect stream latency, and may even cause individual audio sources to stop working. Keep an eye on CPU usage especially, and close background programs if needed.

Occasionally, this can be caused by incorrect device timestamps. Restart OBS to reset buffering.

Source affected (potential cause): Game audio
4. Try 120 Hz.
