Issue: Game Crashing & Black Screens

Description:

For the past month I have been experiencing game crashes and monitoring black screens. It all started after I accidentally updated to Windows 11. Then due to the issue, I reverted to Windows 10 to have the same problem. I happens only at random and have not found a way to make it reoccur on command.

I need help diagnosing if OBS is my problem. I have tried multiple solutions involving SMITE (Steam & Epic Games), GPU (Hardware, Software, and Drivers), OBS, Windows 10, Monitors, and New Programs. I have had no success. Below is a list of solutions I have tried and has failed

SMITE

  • Game uninstalled and Reinstalled (Both Steam and Epic Games) | No error codes when crashing other than once.
    • GCurrentStateData->GetContext()->FinishCommandList(FALSE, CommandList->GetInitReference()) failed at B:\Build\Smite\10.5\Development\Src\D3D11Drv\Src\D3D11Drv.cpp:376 with error 887A0005

GPU (NVIDIA 3090 & 3060) | I have tested both GPUs with the following.

  • Updated to most current driver and one from the past that work. I used DDU in safe mode to ensure a clean uninstall and install.
  • Set NVIDIA control panel to default settings and personal settings.
  • All temperatures are within normal ranges.
  • Stress tested both GPUs using 3D Mark, detected no issues or problems.

OBS | Before this issue, I could stream perfectly. Now OBS and/or my game crashes when streaming with these errors.

  • Encoder Error occurred while recording:
    • NVENC Error: EncodeAPI Internal Error. (NV_ENC_ERR_PARAM)
  • Encoder Error occurred while streaming:
    • NVENC Error: Device passed to the API is invalid. (NV_ENC_ERR_DEVICE)
  • Attached are crash logs with an error that occured with and without the plug-in

Windows 10/11
  • I have done a clean install of Windows 10 that kept all my files.

Monitors | I have two monitors both using DisplayPort

  • Changed cables.

New Programs | I installed these new programs recently and possibly could be the cause as well. But SMITE crashes when active or not.

I apologize for so much information, but I have tried so much to fix this error and posting my issues multiple different help tickets/forums. I want to avoid a complete wipe of my computer if at all possible.

You should contact Streamelements as you're using their plugin which changes some things on OBS.
Alternatively, uninstall SE, then remove the leftover files it keeps in %appdata%\obs-studio\ and then uninstall OBS and reinstall OBS in order to fix further changes this plugin made.
Then, run the Auto-configuration Wizard (tools menu) and apply the settings it gives. Do not change them. Restart OBS (yes, it's important to restart) and test.

Make sure the video drivers are correctly installed. meaning do a clean isntall: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/performing-a-clean-gpu-driver-installation.65/
Don't install any plugin that isn't compatible with the version of OBS you're ruinning.
Don't use nvidia filters unless are known to be safe to use on OBS. Consult nvidia's documentation.

hey, would love to see an update on this. I've been having the same issue with game crashes for a couple months.

Im running windows 11, fortnite craches. it wasn't until i used OBS to try to screen capture the game crash to provide to epic games that i got the OBS error. I have an MSI 3080 and intel 11700k.

Please update if possible.

Popping in here to mention that I experience this issue on two different computers.
I originally believed this was unique to being an OBS issue. However, I have also experienced it in StreamLabs Desktop.

I now believe it's an Nvidia issue. However, obviously not a very wide spread issue (otherwise there would be 1000s of other streamers yelling about it).

Something must be unique to our systems.
I don't have logs, but I'll list some detailed specs of the systems I have:

Comp-1:
CPU: AMD 5950x
RAM: 64GB GSkill DDR4 3600
Mobo: Gigabyte X570 AORUS MASTER
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 3080 ti
OS: Win 10 x64 Enterprise
Other: Elgato HD60 Pro capture card, BlackMagic HDMI Quad capture card, Elgato Stream deck, 3 monitors

Comp-2:
CPU: AMD 7900x
RAM: 64GB GSkill DDR5 6000
Mobo: ASUS ROG STRIX B650E-F GAMING WIFI
GPU: Gigabyte RTX 4070 ti
OS: Win 10 x64 Enterprise
Other: Elgato HD60 Pro capture card, Elgato Stream deck, 3 monitors

Worth noting: When running Windows 10, the issue I experience is the "black screen" issue mentioned above. I'll be streaming, then all my screens will go black, then everything will return but OBS will be frozen (sometimes it will be fully locked up).
I have attempted running Windows 11 on both of these systems, and on Win11 I don't get the "black screen" issue. Instead i would get an "encoder error" pop up which would stop the stream/recording (sorry, I don't have a screenshot of the exact message of those)

But, if any of what I'm saying sounds familiar to others, I'd love to get to the bottom of what the cause of this is.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a question; did you have any issues on Comp-2 (the B650E one) with getting the Elgato card to show up? I have the same setup (mobo/capcard, different GPU though it's not relevant to my question specifically), and the card doesn't appear in Device Manager or anything like that; it's like it's not even plugged in.

Has anyone found a solution for this problem? I have the same problem for MONTHS now since September of 2023.
My PC Specs:
GPU: Zotac RTX 3060
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9, 12 core 3900x
Mobo: ASRock B450M Steel Legend
RAM: 32gb DDR3 3600
1tb NVMe M.2 (for Win 10 OS)
PSU: Fully Modular 750v Gold
I'm a Smol Vtuber that uses a few programs during stream both VtubeStudios and VSeeFace for Model, T.I.T.S (Twitch Integrated Throwing System), Discord, a chat bot, and of course whatever game or app I'm doing for stream. a few minutes after loading the game or app my entire PC cuts to black and my stream and all programs would crash. I kept thinking that it was maybe the Nvidia GPU having issues so I swapped the encoder from the GPU: NVIDIA NVENC H.264 (new), to the CPU: Software (x264). that stopped the Stream from crashing but it doesn't stop everything else from crashing. I'm wondering if it's a PSU problem and if I should swap my 750v for a 1000v, or if I should get another RTX 3060 for all the programs I use and my current one for the encoding? I use Streamlabs OBS but if others using Stream Elements OBS are having the same issues than it's not the OBSs fault, it's gotta be something else, right?
