Question / Help FPS Slowdown in OBS Only

Without a logfile it's impossible to tell. Even if you get bad results, you will certainly not get the *same* bad results by using those different settings.

Hi Guys,

I'm beyond stumped for this one. The FPS on OBS gets periodic slowdown/microstutter whether I'm streaming or not. This is a totally new problem and I have zero idea why it's happening. Before I start to ramble, please see log file here: https://obsproject.com/logs/xNxSF0F4jsW_it2f

My PC/Stream Setup
CPU: Core i7-8700k @ 4.8 ghz
RAM: 16 GB
GPU: GTX 1070Ti
SSD: Samsung 970 Pro
Gaming Monitor - 25" Alienware @ 144hz
Secondary Monitor - 27" Dell @ 144hz
Webcams: 2x Logitech C922
Capture Card: Elgato HD60 Pro
Internet Connection: Gigabit Fiber 900mbps down/up
Microphone: AT-2020 USB

My gf and I run a single stream together. We have two webcams side by side and then I capture her gaming footage on a capture, this all gets rendered on my computer and then uploaded. It used to run perfectly smoothly, but lately, FPS starts to randomly drop on OBS. It's strange because it's not affecting any in-game performance or anything else. There are just certain times where the FPS begins to go down. It's never dropped frames, it just goes from like 60 fps down to 35. CPU usage gets to maybe 10% max.
Tutuapp 9apps Showbox
Things I've tried
  • Disabling preview
  • Running just a solo scene where it's my game + webcam
  • Changing bitrate settings/CPU presets/using NVENC
  • Changing monitor refresh rates
I did notice that it stays a very consistent 60 FPS if I alt tab out of the game onto the OBS screen. For example, I toggle auto run in Fortnite, alt tab, hang out on the OBS Window, never drops below 60 FPS. I'm absolutely stumped and whoever can figure this out for me - you're a god amongst men.

Additional Info
Not sure if this matters, but wanted to be as comprehensive as possible. For sound, I'm using VoiceMeeter Banana with a VB-Audio Virtual Cable. I'm capturing and mixing: my microphone, my PC sounds, and Discord.
For me the strangest thing is, that even with an fps limit and staying under 85% GPU load the stream/recording will some times stutter a few minutes before getting smooth again. But in general the fps limit (or rather the lower GPU load) does prevent OBS from rendering lag and the reasons behind that are somehow logic, although this was not necessary on Win7.
I will still tell people with Win10 + OBS render lag + missing FPS limit, to limit their ingame fps.
Other solutions:
- swap back to Windows 7 and disable Aero
- use a separate streaming PC and a capture card

Win7 is not an option for many people (because of Hard-/Software compatibility issues for example).

Of course, I would be happy, if Microsoft will change this behavior in the future, but I would not bet on it.

I will say that I am also having the same issue. Spelunky is the only game that gives me this issue. I can play Civ VI or any other game without issue. But if both OBS and Spelunky are running (OBS doesn't even have to be recording), Spelunky is super stuttery.

Edit to add that even a game like Stellaris does not cause issues.

I had that issue however I reinstall the game and Update my VGA drivers too. I don't know how it fixes. now Spelunky is working well. I download tutuapp strategy games too. all are working nicely without any issues.
