So I've been trying to record some gameplay in 120 fps since I have a monitor capable of viewing such content, however I am experiencing fps drops in game that bring me below 120 fps, usually around 90 or so. The drop to 90 usually occurs during intense fights in various games (Overwatch, Doom, Rainbow Six Siege, etc.), but not always. I am recording using the Nvenc encoder so that my GPU can take the brunt of the workload since I doubt my CPU can handle encoding 120 fps while playing the games if I use the 264x encoder.
My system specs are:
I7 4790k
GTX 1080 Ti
24 Gigs of RAM
Playing games off of either an SSD or HDD, but recording to a 500GB 850 Evo
According to Open Hardware Monitor, GPU Video Engine Load has never gone over 44%, and GPU Core Load hovers around 85% depending on the game (while recording). CPU Usage tends to hover around 70% while gaming and recording, although sometimes it will jump up to the 80s with no corresponding increase in usage by any programs according to task manager. I've tried using bitrates all the way from 25000 to 170000, and downscaling to either 1080p or 720p using lanczos. I just can't figure out what is causing the drop in framerates.
The footage isn't choppy at all, it's just the game that has issues, and lowering graphics settings seems to have no correlation to the fps drops. Does anyone know what could be going on here?
