First time user, need help. Can not get sound, using video capture device.

I've read the startup guide several times. I must be missing something.
I'm using an HDMI to USB3 capture device (trying to download recordings from a dvr). I have no issues with video but no sound at all.
I did run the automatic set up when I installed the app.
Originally I had movement on the sound meters but a clicking sound on recordings. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software and now no movement or sound at all.

It may be an issue with HDCP. Even with a device that strips HDCP (to let you record your DVR videos as allowed by US law), sound seems to be an issue.

But you can also try changing the format that your DVR outputs if that is an option. I record HDMI audio by using a TosLink extractor. It has an HDMI passthrough and sends out optical audio. Then I have a Zoom U-44 getting that audio to the computer. You have to use ASIO Input Capture plugin to let OBS use that audio
