Fire TV Stick 4K (With Alexa Voice) To PC

My Dell 8300 running Windows 10 Pro has an HDMI port (5) that’s described as “Connect a TV or another HDMI-in enabled device. Provides video and audio output.”

I want to use a Fire TV Stick 4k with Alexa Voice Remote on this machine. I’ve installed the OBS Studio software app and attempted to use it by pushing the + sign then selecting “Video Capture Device”. When I did so, I found the Fire Stick isn’t listed. That tells me either I’m looking in the wrong area of OBS or “Port 5” of my machine doesn't have the ability to use a Fire Stick and I’ll need to buy a capture card.

Have I pushed the wrong button in OBS or do I need a capture card?

The HDMI port on your Dell is Output only. Not sure a capture card would work either, It is my understanding there are different flavors of HDMI.

If you plugged a Fire stick into a DVD player, what would happen?
It's the same here with the HDMI port on your laptop. It sends video out (hence 'output'), it does not take a video signal in.

HDMI is not a bidirectional standard, even if the connector on both ends is the same.

Well.... It's a tad clearer now. It's not the HDMI port I want apparently... it's the USB. The young lady in this video will tell us all about it. I assume when I complete the setup through with a capture card, the USB port will register as a video device in the OSB software and I should be good to go. Ya' think?

My problem is the video capture device is not even listed in the devices drop down box. I've tried different USB ports and different firesticks. The only thing listed in the drop down is OBS virtual camera.

The Fire TV sticks output video to hdmi only. The USB port is for power supply only, you cannot read or write any data with it. Its WLAN connection is used for the internet connection to get the video streaming data.

To read the video signal and supply it to OBS, you need a hdmi capture device. However you will probably see mostly nothing, because most content will probably be locked with DRM, so you cannot output it only to a TV device, not to a capture device.

I found out what my problem was. In security and privacy, I had app camera access turned off. Not sure why it needs camera access but it solved my problem.
