Question / Help Fickle microphone settings

I have a USB Microphone that I use to record youtube videos with. I've gotten consistently good feedback on the audio quality from this microphone. However, getting it to register correctly in OBS is a pain in the ass.

I can add my USB microphone as an "audio input source," and it will work just fine for a little while. But after a few recording sessions, it starts playing double audio back to me. The result is that my voice has an extremely annoying echo to it.

I can temporarily fix the problem with the double recording by (and I'm not making this up) ... MUTING the audio input altogether! This effectively means that my mixer menu looks like this:

That alone is weird. You would think that this would completely mute my voice altogether, not just get rid of the echo/double recording. But nope, it temporarily makes my voice come out okay.

Until at some random interval, it suddenly decides it wants to do what you expect it to do and completely mute my voice altogether. Turning the microphone mixer back on fixes that problem, and allows me to record my voice without difficulty ... until such time that it decides it wants to start recording my voice twice again and give me the echo again.

The cycle continues.

Is there any way to make this go away?
