Question / Help Fans run constantly when OBS is open, is there a setting making it run like this?

Using a GPU based encoder will take the load off of the CPU and help it run cooler. X264 is a pure software encoder that only uses the cpu (and a lot of it.)I don’t understand what you mean by direction. This is for output. You can’t control encoding for inputs.

Okay, thanks for the clarification

I am running a Macbook Pro 2018 6 core i7 32gb ram and 4gb Vram and use the Apple VT Hardware encoder which uses about 40% less CPYU power but also makes OBS less stable. For me when i use the hardware encoder the machine has less stress but OBS is constantly hanging up with a the Pinwheel when i press anything in the UI which is useless. I ended up switching back to the X264 encoder which taxes the CPU much more but I can at least use the software.

On another not when i run OBS with Hardware encoder on my 2015 imac i have no issues. I wonder if it is a hardware limitation of the Macbook pro's size?

I recently got a new Macbook Pro 2019 with 32 GB of memory (macOS Catalina).

5 minutes after I open OBS, before even starting to record or anything else, the Activity Monitor shows this for the OBS process:
% CPU = 27
% GPU = 12
Threads = 17
GPU Time = 12 minutes
Energy Impact = 29

Then, I start recording and 5 minutes after I start recording, the fans get super loud and the Activity Monitors shows this for the OBS process:
% CPU = 212
% GPU = 12
Threads = 45
GPU Time = 1 hour, 30 minutes
Energy Impact = 215

Please help!! The fans noise is making it impossible to use OBS anymore.

Thank you.

Just got OBS and it was a saviour as it can do something Ecamm can't: rotate the video streams. .... but my 2019 MacBook pro is doing this same thing - crazy fans. Is there no fix to this yet?

Just found the problem - all 2019 16 inch MacBook pros have screaming full fans when connected to an external display. Grr. I have implemented all 3 "fixes" here, and it's better.. but not silent. I currently have Brave, OBS, and Mail open and the fans are running at 4100 rpm - would be a lot more if I did not implement these settings. I'm really disappointed by this 16 inch MacBook pro.

It only appears as a choice on that part of settings. OBS doesn’t really give you choice on encoding input video. That depends on the drivers for the capture device.
