All,
I joined the forum to post this evening and have been using OBS for years. It's been a great program and I've had little to no problems with it until my HDD crashed and I decided to get some new SSDs. I reinstalled OBS Studio (I needed to reinstall the OS) and all of a sudden the x264 encoder is completely chewing up my CPU usage and maxing it out to 90%+ when I record alone from 2500kbps upward (let alone streaming and recording). I am aware of the various CPU presets and quality settings (including NVENC as I have an Nvidia GPU). Long story short - before the crash I was casting Half Life 2 (and MANY other games) with x264 at 6000kbps with very fast CPU preset. I also recorded simultaneously using the streaming encoder settings without a hitch. I bring this up because (before you laugh at the specs) I am aware that my system is more than capable of handling this output (if you can believe it!). Hell, the evidence is right here on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/285201706. That video was about a week before my HDD went down using the aforementioned x264 settings. Admittedly, I was using an older version from around 2016 but 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' as the saying goes. You will note that this version of OBS is from around that time. This was my last attempt before succumbing to the massive file sizes (to get comparable quality) from the NVENC encoder. To be clear, this was a fresh OS install and I updaded my GPU and Mobo drivers before installing any other software. Also, I initially tried the latest release of OBS Studio and messed around with it before trying older releases. Naturally, I initially tried my old OBS settings and was taken aback by how much lag was introduced into the game (unplayable). I track my CPU usage via MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, and HWiNFO 64 so I'm able to see it on the fly in-game using hotkeys. It jumps from ~20% in-game without recording or streaming to ~100% when recording alone!
If installing the latest release again and uploading the log file would be more beneficial - please let me know and I will be happy to do it. For the record, the problem has been across all versions of OBS studio that I've installed and I have made no changes to sources. All I have is the game at fullscreen and a small JPEG logo - no webcam, GIFs, browser windows, etc. I didn't even use the logo for the log file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for such wonderful software over the years.
