Question / Help Error Message when Opening

I get this error message ever time I open the program.

"The program cannot start because MSVCR120.dll is missing from your computer, try reinstalling..."

But the program actually does start and I have been able to record with no issues?

And Id like to just say that after looking at ways to record, this is a gem! Great quality and simple enough to use and nice small files. Good stuff!

If I may tag on another little tech question... I put my bit rate up considerably just as a test and in game experienced some lag but not that much. However, using VLC to playback my file afterwards the picture often froze but I could still hear the audio. Can the program actually freeze the image like that during recording or is it more likely my graphics card struggling to play back the HD video? I have experienced this before with my Elgato from xbox recordings. Records them fine but editing them and watching them back is such a pain. Any tips to improve my capabilities with big files/HD editing/playback greatly encouraged! :D

Any help greatly appreciated!

Regards!

Thanks for the reply! Installed and the error message is gone, you're a wizard!

I am using OBS to record gameplay by selecting the window once I've opened the game on my desktop through steam. I tried a few test pieces on a game called Awesomenaughts which is a side on multiplayer online battle arena, not graphics intensive I guess. I tried 2500, 5000, 7500 and 15000 bit rates. All of these play back fine and the 15000 looks quite good.

However, I tried to play a game called Xcom, a turn based tactical game and although the picture is great at 15000, there is the odd frame loss/jitters in the playback. I haven't played around with it on lower bit rates yet however.

Is it likely that my machine just cant handle it all?

Windows 8.1, 64 bit, Intel Core I-53330 CPU @ 3.00ghz, 8gbram, AMD Radeon HD 6670

Appreciate your reply!

If you're doing recording, using fixed bitrates is not a good idea.

Turn on "Use Custom Buffer Size", set the size to 0.
Turn off "Use CBR" and take the CRF value in the encoder down until you get close to your cpu limit. You can also adjust the CPU Usage preset to Ultrafast (the fastest one in the list, faster presets use less cpu time). That may help.

Thank you, I will try that. I did not know that about the bit rates, I have been reading up but the learning curve is steep and I'm a perfectionist when it comes to these things! I will try the new settings tomorrow.

I'm unsure as to what my CPU limit will be... how can I educate myself and find this out?

I did however just replay the exact same mission in Xcom but changed the scaled resolution to 720p which seemingly gave no lag in the recording I just watched back.

CRF values below about 15 offer diminishing returns on quality.

What ends up happening with CRF-based encoding settings is that the video bitrate will dynamically adjust to what is necessary for recording the given scene. It offers excellent quality at low disk space use.

It just doesn't work well on streaming.

With the new settings you suggested I think I am getting a good balance with my recordings. I used a CRF value of 20.

I have come across another problem however... so I have OBS open ready, and then load a game. Once it goes to fullscreen I have to return to the desktop using the windows key to select the gameplay window to record. Sometimes when I do this it forces the game to crash. Or am I doing something wrong?

Any help much appreciated!

Kind of fixed the problem by dual screening so I can see my OBS on the other screen and tabbing out using steam instead of hitting windows key. I dunno, but it seems to work!

Got another question for anyone who has a read here...

I am doing a project in photoshop, but I only want to record what happens on my canvas. Is there a way to record my canvas area directly or is it simpler to just crop it in sony vegas when editing? Not a big issue but if I can do it in stage 1 I rather would!

Loving this product!

You will have to use Monitor capture to capture Photoshop, or else it won't pick up all the sub-windows. You can always crop the capture by adding a crop filter to the monitor capture.
