Question / Help Encoding overload i5 6500

Hey guys,

I just started streaming my gear is:

i5 6500
r9 390
8 GB RAM
10.8 mbps upload speed.

I want to stream Overwatch mainly.

I got the encoding overloaded error when I was streaming last night and the stream was very laggy.

What streaming settings should I aim for?
Can I stream with this gear?

Thanks!

Post your obs log.
Where do I find the logs?
I have OBS studio installed on my secondary hard drive. and I also still have OBS non studio installed (on my main hard drive) from when I tried to stream a while ago.

EDIT : found them - I messed with the settings a bunch to try and find a good solution near the end was the closest but still not perfect.

oh i wasnt precise. if your monitor is 60hz then
1. desktop refresh=60
2. ingame menu refresh=60 +vsync
3. obs fps 30.

gotcha. My monitor is actually 144hz and I try to run Overwatch at 144hz. Could it be that me pushing overwatch to 144hz makes the stream laggy?
I will try to stream full screen and vsync as soon as I get home.

hmm if monitor will allow for 60 desktop refresh I would not go higher and stay with it for the sake of stream/record
if not, then you may need "limit capture framerate" option in game capture source properities

I guess I have to sacrifice the glorious 144fps if I want to stream.. at least until i get a better CPU.

Also what is better for streaming getting a better i5 and overclocking it or investing in an i7?

its not about cpu here. its about 144hz<->60hz conflict which needs extra options to convert and make it smooth. when you play in 60hz+vsync you already have source material ready for encoding, obs grabs 60 fps or 30 at half rate and its done. but you cant divide 144 easily to make it 60 or 30 and it results in stutters

i7+oc ^^

oh! so if i did 120hz would that work as well? I much rather go down to 120 than to 60

yup afaik 120 should work better than 144 if gpu can keep constant 120 fps in game.
you may still need to experiment with "limit capture framerate", test test test

Yeah i can keep a constant 144 so 120 should be easy! thanks for all the help. Ill experiment tonight and post back with an update!

Could you please give us an update? What exactly did the trick for you, if you got it working smoothly? A friend of mine has the same CPU and is struggling with the same issue you described.

Thank you in advance.
