Every time I click "Check for Updates", it doesn't do anything. I should probably take this to mean that there are no updates, but it doesn't tell me otherwise.

That menu option is likely not wired in to anything yet.
If you're building from git, checking that the commit part of the version number matches what's on Github is a good way, otherwise, if you're using a PPA, then a normal "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" will get you a new version, if one has been made available.
