Question / Help DUAL-PC recording performance issues

hey there!

i just revived my old computer for game recording tasks and obs just doesn't like it! :D

but first, specs:

gaming pc:
i7 2600k, stock, runs on a asrock z68 extreme 3 gen 3
16 gb ddr3 ram
msi gtx 980 ti 6g
windows 10 pro 64 bit

recording pc:
core 2 quad q9550, oced to 3.5 ghz, runs on a gigabyte p35-ds3r BIOS F13
4 gb ddr2 ram
128gb crucial ssd (system)
320 gb seagate hdd 7200 rpm (recordings)
elgato game capture hd60 pro (newest driver version)
obs 0.14.2
elgato game capture and drivers (newest version)
windows 7 pro 64 bit
no other software.

video and audio goes from hdmi out of the 980 ti of the gaming pc to the hdmi in of the elgato hd60 pro in the recording pc.
i get a picture, i get sound, everything is fine.

that's bugging me:

when i start obs, the preview eats between 80 and 90 % of the recording pcs cpu usage just for showing the video it gets from the capture card. after pressing "record", the cpu goes up to 99-100% and the resulting mp4 is choppy and laggy as hell. (elgato software eats about 30%, but i want obs nao!) ram goes up to 30% usage.

i use the "high quality" settings from a thread here: https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/
i set the crf to 23. still the same issues.

i'd like to know where i should start to tweak settings to get a decent video quality without any choppyness.
is the cpu to old?

please help and sorry for my bad english :D

You would get better results recording with NVENC on your gaming PC. Use the recording quality presets under Settings > Output (Simple output mode).

well... i guess i gotta ditch both computers, sell their parts and stomp a 6800k hexacore monster out of the ground. should do better than both current systems working together.

Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion considering you have a perfectly viable solution with your existing gaming PC (basically free 1080p60 recording thanks to NVENC) but have fun I guess.

i try to record in nearly lossless quality (premiere pro will compress it anyways) and various stuttering and desync issues between these to computers are juist making me ill. i hate how i just spend about 300 bucks to get the old computer up and running, hoping that my performance issues would get away with this. but in the end i just exchanged piles of problems. with dual pc i can play in perfect quality, but the recordings are just garbage when it comes to editing and video/audio sync.

Like I said, there's no reason to use a 2PC setup with that kind of terrible second PC, the NVENC encoder on your gaming PC is more than capable of making great looking 1080p60 recordings with no extra load.

i did as you said. while the results are much better, it's still a litte choppy and grainy... i don't know. maybe the z68 platform is getting too old. i want the smoothness of the live gameplay. sure, the quality can't be as lossless (especially on youtube), but i need good sound and smooth movements.

i'll upgrade to x99 and will report here how it worked out for me.
