Double audio stream in recorded MKV file

Hi,

I am a new user of OBS 31.1.2 Window 11 64 version. I am using it to convert clips from VHS to MKV files. Initial installation and operating without a hitch, I am very impressed.

While recording it there is no problem with the sound and picture at all. However upon playing the recorded clip, the audio appears to have 2 streams of identical audio playing a fraction of second apart. I thought it was due to the stereo setting, so I changed it to mono, still the problem persist.

Is there any remedy for this problem? Thank you.

Cheers,
Dien

As default, a video capture device outputs its audio just to the recording. You hear nothing on your PC, but audio is in the recording.

This might have confused you and you probably enabled monitoring in advanced audio settings. Now you hear the capture device from your PC speakers. However, OBS has desktop audio as default global audio device source, which records your speakers. So you have 2 audio sources mixed in your recording: the video capture device (directly) and the monitored audio from your desktop audio (slightly delayed).

How to correct this: remove desktop audio from your global audio sources in Settings > Audio > Global audio devices by setting every source to disabled. The only audio source present in the audio mixer should be the video capture device audio. This is what you should do anyway to avoid any Windows sounds appear in your recording by accident.
