Question / Help Does NVENC work when not used?

If i don't have an HDMI cable connecting my monitor to my Nvidia GPU when i hit record, is it using the GPU to encode or does it secretly default to something else?

I ask because some editors won't use the gpu if my monitor isn't hooked up to it when i try to use it's hardware acceleration. So i wondered if OBS behaved similar.

OBS uses whatever encoder you tell it to use. By default, it selects x264 as the encoder, and you can change that in output settings.

If you are referring to where OBS renders everything (as opposed to encodes), then that is dependent on what GPU OBS is running on. That is usually controlled by your GPU driver settings. You can look at your log to see if OBS is using your GPU or your integrated card.
