hey guys,

at the moment i'm struggling to choose my CPU.

I7-6800K or i7-5960X. Because the i7-5960X has 8 cores and yeah.

But i dont know if OBS Studio can really have a big benefit from 2 cores.

So before i invest so much money, i'm here to ask the support/devs.

When encoding video for live streaming we generally recommend x264 as an encoder which you might have guessed already. And as pointed out above, x264 is very good at scaling up.

The i7-5960X does perform better than the newer i7-6800K at video encoding... However, when dealing with the different presets in x264 to help you choose compression levels, the next bump down is going to be quite a big hit to performance.

I'm not sure the difference in processing power will be enough to give you that next bump in quality. And that is difficult to test because it depends on the content you're encoding - how much motion there.

I would personally go for the 6800K, but the 5960X is slightly better in theory.

The more cores the better for streaming, encoding, editing, etc. Per core clock speed is still dominant for pure gaming.

Have you thought about the Ryzen chip-sets? They are cheaper and so far appear to be very comparable even at entry to retail point, which in turn means they will become better with BIOS and revision through chip-set drivers.

Go for a Ryzen CPU. I have one and can game and stream using the "faster" CPU preset with no issues at all.
