Question / Help Connect Canon XHA1 to Macbook Pro - Thunderbolt

Trying to connect an old Canon XHA1 to a mid-2014 Macbook Pro, which only has USB and Thunderbolt ports. I have a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter I'm trying to use for the connection, but at this point it's not being seen by the OBS software. Suggestions?

Does the camera have AVCapture drivers? I kind of doubt it, those kinds of cameras usually don't for this sort of thing. Is there a program that lets you preview the camera in a preview window on the computer? You can try using display capture on that and cropping, though that's awkward. I recommend getting a capture card and use the camera's HDMI out (if it has one) to capture.

To clarify, I'm wanting to livestream using this camera (hence my post in this forum). The OBS software doesn't see the camera.

Yes, I understand that. Presumably you are trying to add the camera to OBS as a video capture device, right? That's why I was asking you the questions above.

It's just got Firewire output. There must be a capture card with Firewire in and Thunderbolt out but I haven't seen one yet.

Googling some pictures of the camera, it looks like it has a Component output on the back? Is that true?

OK, from the picture it looks like a D-Terminal output. You can get a D-Terminal -> Component converter, then use a capture card that takes component input to capture the video. The Thunderbolt BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle should work.

In other words, starting with the plug at the bottom right here: http://www.itchyhousefilms.com/images/Canon-XH-A1-ports-rear.jpg

Plug one of these into that: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-TERMINAL-Component-Professional-Camcorder/dp/B000R4X7PY

Then plug the component end of that (the 3 prongs) into this: http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-Intensity-Shuttle-Thunderbolt/dp/B007ZDHDRS

For audio, you can plug one of these into the headphone jack of the camera on one end and the RCA ports into the audio input of the BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle on the other end: http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-3-5mm-Male-2-Male-Adapter/dp/B004YEBK66

Then plug the capture card into the Thunderbolt port of your computer.

Then you can add the BlackMagic Intensity Shuttle to OBS via the BlackMagic source.
