Question / Help Church worship audio solutions

We are using the Elgato HD60S for live streaming via OBS for our church services. Currently, we use a mic out from the sound board into the Elgato. However, the audio sometimes will cut out, clip, or get distorted. Just a single audio feed from our Pastor doing the sermon works absolutely fine. My belief is maybe the Elgato's built in audio decoder doesn't handle the audio feed that well. What have others done to get better audio streaming with their live streams? Right now, I am thinking of getting a studio grade dedicated sound card for the desktop running OBS. Is this the best way to go?

Daveyboye,

100% same setup. I found in the first two weeks that the audio would drop out or become choppy. The third week I brought in a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 that I use for other purposes. It worked great and sustained audio even when the video encoding got a little dicey. However, I had not accounted for the video delay in processing and not adjusted the audio delay accordingly. Make sure, should you go a similar route, to go to the Advanced Audio Properties and adjust the delay of audio to match your video.

I did have some issues with OBS recognizing the Scarlett at first, but here is what I found:

1. In a pinch you can go to your Audio Settings in System Preferences and change the INPUT device to your external audio device. This will then allow OBS to see the audio stream coming in on the Mic/Line signal that appears as default with all scenes.

2. If you have a newer MacBook with USB-C, use two different ports to run the HD60 and your audio device. There are rare instances that the HD60 may need to be reset and if it is on the same port as your audio device it may reset as well.

3. Even if you're mixing for the stream, listen to the stream post your audio device. I found large variances in the audio signal post processing by the audio device. Certain frequencies were highlighted while others were pulled back or nearly muted. A quick tap on the shoulder of the person running the board and we were all set.

Additional note - and this one is free, too - that if you notice the audio get off in the stream over time you can still adjust the audio delay. But beware as the audio may drop out for a moment. It almost appears as if the software is recalibrating and rebuffering the audio stream. It's a little annoying but better than watching your pastor preach the New Testament in Bruce Lee's Kung Fu stylings.

Best of luck!
