Question / Help Capturing Hackintosh Screen.

Hi guys.

I would like to capture my computer screen, a hackintosh setup to be specific. Though my concern is that all this capturing process should not be done by the CPU, since I would like to capture a tutorial of a software that is really heavy on CPU. If OBS is using GPU to capture the screen, I am not sure my NVIDIA web driver supports it or not. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't. I am willing to pay if there's a hardware solution that really works well. I would also record my prosumer audio input too.

What do you think? Please help me, I really appriciate it.

OBS always uses the GPU to render frames.

Whether it uses the CPU or the GPU to compress frames depends on what your hardware is and how you set up OBS.

If you're using the x264 software encoder, then your CPU is doing the work.

If your hardware supports it and you choose the Apple VT Hardware Encoder, then your GPU will be doing it. I think at the moment this is only supported on Mac hardware that uses Intel on-board video (it's basically QuickSync).

The only hardware solution to avoid this is a hardware capture device AND a second machine, since even if you plug the video out of your computer to a hardware capture device, that capture hardware device needs to be plugged into a computer, and that computer actually does most of the work.
