Question / Help Can't click Start Recording with NVENC

So I'm trying to use OBS Studio to record some footage of Oculus Rift gameplay. I want to use nvenc because it doesn't affect my fps, where as the software encoder causes stuttering. However, whenever I try to use it, I can't click the Start Recording button. I'm using an EVGA GTX 1080. It always gives the same three error:

warning: This encoder is deprecated, use 'h264_nvenc' instead
error: OpenEncodeSessionEx failed: out of memory (10)
fatal: No NVENC capable devices found

I've attached my latest log file, any advice would be great.

The rift isn't what's relevant. Even with it unplugged, I cannot record anything using nvenc.
So I'm trying to use OBS Studio to record some footage of Oculus Rift gameplay.

We had no way of knowing it wasn't relevant until you said you'd tested without it. By your description, we are led to believe that you were testing with it enabled. Even with that information, I still don't know when or how the Rift drivers/software interact with the system when the hardware is not in use. As far as I know, the incompatibility is actually between the Rift drivers and NVENC. I would still suggest checking with the Oculus Rift community to see if you need to rollback the drivers to a working version or uninstall to avoid the issue.

In the meantime, try this... Change your setting to x264, save your settings, exit OBS. Open OBS, change your setting to NVENC, save your settings, try to record. Does it work?

If not, try to make a new Profile and Scene Collection. Setup NVENC for recording and try to record. Does it work?

If that fails, try testing OBS in Portable Mode. Does that work?

Well, I've got to eat some crow. Even with the Rift disconnected, the OVRserver was still running in the background. Stopping that service allowed OBS to record as normally. Thanks for your help RytoEX! I'll move my query to the oculus forums.
