Question / Help Cannot get sound working

I'm trying to use OBS Studio to play the feed from an IP camera onto a TV, which is attached as the main HDMI screen on the PC.If I record a file as an MP4 I get sound included, but I cannot get the sound to play on the PC while watching the feed.I have no special sound card, just using the PC's built in card. OBS Studio has created two audio output devices - Desktop Audio and Desktop Audio 2. Whatever I do I cannot get a little green line to display indicating that either of those devices are trying to play sound. Any suggestions?

My logfile is here: https://gist.github.com/9f4c757683356b99319a371b7294f37b

Thanks for any assistance.

Don't save to mp4 and don't rely on windows media player to have good media format support.

I guess I haven't made myself clear. My problem is not with recording, or streaming. My problem is that when OBS is running and a sound stream is input, no sound is output through the PC's speakers or through the TV which is connected by HDMI. Under the mixer bit of the OBS Studio window, the sound input streams appear to be working because the little green line fluctuates to indicate a variable sound stream. However the two audio output devices do not show the fluctuating green line, and I can't hear the sound.

To prove to myself that the sound is getting into OBS Studio, I tried recording. I chose to use mp4, the file was recorded, and when I came to play it back using VLC, both sound and picture worked. That is all I am using the Start Recording facility for - to prove that sound is getting into OBS. What I need is for sound to get out of OBS (to the speakers or to the TV) while I am viewing live.

As an aside, what is wrong with mp4 as a container format? That bit is working for me.

Thanks.

If the file doesn't get finalized properly for ANY reason AT ALL, the entire recording of the mp4 is rendered irreparably corrupt.

With default capture card capture settings, sound does not play through the speakers or any computer-side sound device on the capturing computer.

Thanks for the info about mp4. What is the recommended container format?

Is there any way to get sound playing on the capturing computer? If so, how does one do it? Your comment says "With default capture card capture settings...". What about with some non-default settings?

The recommended container formats are FLV and MKV. If you need multi-track audio for your recordings, you use MKV. If you only use a single audio track, either is fine.

In the video capture device properties, "Audio Output Mode" is the setting to adjust.
