Question / Help Cannot get lossless recording to work.

Hello,

I want to record losslessly for later reencoding, but it does not work.

Here is 4x nearest neighbor upscale comparison between the YouTube logo as seen in my browser vs. as seen in playback of the recording with madVR:

As you can see, it's not 100% identical, i.e. not lossless.

Here are my settings (OBS 17.0.2):

What's wrong? (Am not too experienced with video encoding by the way)

Looks like color space conversion. What color settings are configured under Settings > Advanced?

Bump.

Also this appears to work for lossless only. Any other setups have the original problem again, regardless of how high bitrate is set.

For colour settings, use RGB, Rec. 709 and full range.

Also, this post has some info: 709 vs 601, in short:
...
You can output RGB in Output Mode: Simple, Recording Quality: Lossless Quality;
and don't forget to specify in Advanced settings Color Format: RGB.

If you are looking for max settings with x264: Output Mode: Advanced;
at Recording tab set Rate Control: CRF, CRF: 0;
then try to specify in Advanced settings Color Format: I444, YUV Color Range: Full.
This is max settings for Studio's x264 recordings.
...
The OBS Studio streaming forces NV12 use (i.e. RGB-->YUV conversion present).

And make sure that you be able to edit and view such footage in the right way...

So, it is not possible to record lossy compressed with RGB? (I444 looks much better though; thanks!)

What about compressed lossless? That'd be very effective for desktop recordings I imagine.

Oops! Went completely over my head that that already is compressed. Maybe I expected better results than is reasonable. Did the math again and it's good. Thanks for the help!
