Black screen when playing back OBS captures made on my high end desktop gaming PC?

I have searched for this problem on the net, and found others having the same problem. Two workarounds were suggested, using OBS in Admin mode, and listing OBS as a desktop capture device (I'm on W11). Neither worked, and I also have the latest version of OBS.

I am playing back the captures in VLC, which also has the latest update. VLC is set to associate with both mp4 and mkv. It works fine with my mp4 ShadowPlay clips, but not with OBS mp4 or mkv clips. ShadowPlay stopped working in Remnant II though, so I need an alternative.

I know when using OBS for editing, you need to select a source and import the video file. As far as I know, no such thing is necessary for capture though. I've also checked the capture settings, which appear to be fine. Can someone please help me with this problem?

It's not clear from your description if you're unable to replay captured *.mp4 or *.mkv videos, or if the OBS preview is black when you try capturing your game, so the game footage isn't written to the video file in the first place and these video files just contain blackness.

People doesn't seem to have an issue in general with game capturing SW Jedi Survivor (this is what your source description contains), so in general it should work. Try deleting the game capture source and add it again. Works best if you run the game, switch to OBS, then add the game capture source. Run the game in windowed mode or windowed fullscreen, not in exclusive fullscreen mode, so you're able to see the game and OBS on the same desktop, so you see if the capturing is successful without doing a recording.

I was wondering if it was the wrong log file, and it seems it is. SW Jedi Survivor was a game I was trying to capture some time ago. What I'm trying to capture now is Remnant II.

To answer your questions, I have tried capturing in both mp4 and mkv, and both show as black screen in the capture clip, and the preview screen. I keep thinking I need to set it up in such a way that the game shows in the preview screen, but don't know how.

OK, found out what was wrong via searching for some OBS game capture guides on YT. I just didn't have it set to Game Capture. All is well now, and quality and performance is great! I also have OBS properly set to stay in Admin mode as well, so hopefully I won't have any glitches either.
