Bug Report Black screen in Ubuntu 17.10 (beta)

Hi,

when launching OBS 20.0.1 under Ubuntu 17.10 (Gnome, so default mode) I'm getting a black screen instead of my display.
When launching OBS under Unity (same computer, just added Unity as alternative DE, so I can switch), it works just fine.

Since Gnome is going to be the default in the near future, I assume this is a bug that needs attention...

Yes, get ready, this is a major problem!

It is not exactly a Gnome issue either, it is a problem with Wayland. Right now you can click the cog wheel when you Log Out on Ubuntu Gnome to switch to Gnome without Wayland and it works perfectly.

Can you or someone see if the beta still has the cog wheel on the Log Out screen and if the ability to run X11 is still available?

I'm having the same problem, should be very easy to reproduce (and I'm sure the devs are already aware of the issue).

It's possible for software like OBS to record the screen in GNOME + Wayland, but instead of capturing from the display server (X11, Wayland) the software needs to go to the compositor (Mutter, in this case). For example, press PrtScrn in GNOME and you'll get a screenshot of the entire screen and all windows; press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+R and GNOME will record a video of your desktop.

This causes a problem for OBS as there are multiple Linux desktop compositors (yay :| ), but the one the vast majority of people will use is Mutter (due to Ubuntu). So the best course is to just support Mutter and say 'PRs welcome' for everything else.
