Question / Help Best Settings for HD Quality Local Recording

Hey everyone. First post here, so sorry if this question has been asked before. I have read guides on presets, etc. To be completely honest, this is uncharted territory for me. Although I am rather tech literate, I am a bit confused by a lot of this.

I am trying to record locally (preferrably .mp4 format for Adobe Premiere compatibility) and I think I did something wrong for a recording last night. Once uploaded to YouTube it maxed out at 720p and did not fill the screen/window completely (black bars on top and bottom). Granted, this may have to do with my stupidity of setting the in-game resolution to 1900 x 1200 but trying to record at 1080 (oy vey!)

Well below are my CPU specs. With said information, would anyone be able suggest good presets? Sorry if it comes across as wanting my hand held, but I feel like I'm learning a foreign language. Just need to be pointed in the right direction.

CPU Specs

Intel Core i5-4690k
Gigabyte GA_Z97X-UD3H
MS R9 380 Gaming 4G
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB
WD Black 2TB

Thanks again for your help guys!

who cares about bitrate in local recordings?

video: base (canvas) = output = 1920x1080 (as in game)
CPU usage preset: superfast or even ultrafast
write to x264 Options: qp=21 bframes=0

and hold your hhd because it rockets up into the sky like spacex rocket :)

don't forget to re-encode files with higher compression later.

Don't know... Do you need this Help Guide: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/game-capture-black-screen.43900/#post-197814 ?
Also, experiment with constant input like fr-043 demo (yes, like it :)

Please post a log if you'd like us to look at your current settings. For local recording your best option is to go to Settings > Output, change mode to Simple, and use the recording quality preset dropdown box. It will emulate the settings from https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/how-to-make-high-quality-local-recordings.16/

That is what I originally used as my settings. Set the drop down to high quality, and still got only 720p and an uploaded video with black around the video.

And the problem with the black bars around the final video only happened after I uploaded. Not during recording or during playback.

You're conflating quality and resolution. If you want to record a 1080p video then the options under Settings > Video need to be configured to output at 1920x1080. The recording quality is a matter of whether the output video looks clean and crisp or like a blocky smudgy pile of garbage, which can happen with the wrong settings regardless of resolution.

The latter is what I'm looking for. I'm still new to this and am learning. It looks like I need to work with the output settings. Below is a link to my log file via Pastebin. It looks like it did record at 720. I suppose I need to up it to lossless quality? Also below is a link to the actual YouTube video so you can see what I am speaking about as to the black space around recorded video.

I do appreciate both your help and your patience with me.

I changed the output settings under Video, which helped me realize my stupidity. I'll test it out. Thanks again for patience and help.

Switch to obs studio
under settings - output:
Output mode: Simple

Encoder: software low cpu use
