BASIC help...

I'm an old dog trying to learn a new trick! Since parents are NOT allowed to watch their kids sports games this Fall, we're attempting to figure out how to live stream games from the field using a Hi-pod sports filming system (elevated platform and a Sony Handycam). The goal is to live stream games on Facebook Live.

Signal goes from Handycam to HDMI "in" on video monitor.
Signal goes from Video monitor HDMI "out" to laptop.

I do NOT have an HDMI "in" on the laptop. I DO have a USB high speed input.

If I get an adapter for the HDMI to USB, will that work? If so, what will my "source" be on OBS in order to see what the Handycam is filming?

This would be a snap if we were using an iphone or ipad, but the Handycam provides us a much better picture and added capabilities (zoom in/out).

Any other tips/tricks feel free to share!

Thanks in advance,

You will need a capture device. They make USB models.

A standard inexpensive 'USB to HDMI' device is for putting video out (such as to add another monitor), not for taking video in. HDMI is not bi-directional, even if the connector is the same on both ends.

The most common USB capture devices are things like the Elgato Camlink, or Elgato HD60S, and usually run around $100 at a bare minimum. Make sure the device (and laptop USB port) is USB 3.0.
