Hi,
I tried googling and searching the forum for this specific issue, but didn't find the answer. If you know it's out there, just slap me in that direction.
I use a SM7b through an SSL 2+ with a gain booster. I have a hardware gain meter on that inteface, where I set my gain to a good level.
Using this setup, when I record with e.g. Reaper, what is being recorded is 1:1 what I see on my hardware gain meter. When it clips on the meter, the waveform hits the ceiling and clips as well.
Using the same setup, I need to use a 300% Volume boost on OBS, to get the waveform near the same dynamics level. When /obs volume is set to 100% it clips at -10dB. Using 200% it clips at -5 dB (which is weird, because OBS says that 200% is a 6dB boost, not a 5dB boost). Using 300% it clips at -0,3dB, so still not 1:1 with my hardware gain meter.
Now, I could just use the 300% gain and go on with my life, as it doesn't appear to introduce any additional noise, but that would be boring, right?
I need to understand why this is so. What's the applied logic here and is it possible for me to get a 1:1 representation of what my hwardware is set to. I would love it to turn out I'm missing something obvious here. Am I?
