Question / Help AV TO USB2.0 Device not shown in Device list

Hello! New to OSB and Video Capture in general. Glad to have a place to discuss issues.

I picked up a cheap USB Video Capture device off Amazon with the intent of transferring my aging VHS tapes to digital format. The one I got says REDGO on it, but it looks like there may be several sellers selling the same device with a different brand name. The thing they have in common is they're listed as an "AV TO USB2.0" device and come with the same Honestech software.

When I plug it into a laptop running Win 10 Pro, Device Manager shows AV TO USB2.0 listed under Cameras and Sound, video and game controllers. When I run the Honestech software, The device is shown in Video Device, and the Audio Device... however, the software does not show any video. When I run OSB, there are no devices listed in the Video Capture Device configuration.

When I plug it into an old laptop running Windows XP, I'm able to see and capture video from the VCR using the Honestech software (Didn't try OSB on that machine)... so I know the hardware is working.

I tried running Windows XP in a VirtualBox on my Win 10 machine. Everything loaded up just like XP machine, however it didn't show any video when I ran the Honestech software.

My preference is to capture audio and video on my Win 10 machine using OSB. Anyone have Ideas as to why the device would not be listed as a Video Capture Device in OSB despite its presence in Device Manager?

The manufacturer didn't provide any drivers. In fact, the directory on the tiny CD that came with the device is labeled HW007_NoDriver.

The driver loaded is from Microsoft. When I look at the Device Manager Event Viewer, I'm seeing this warning:

I returned the REDGO device. I'm now looking into the Composite to HDMI / HDMI Capture device option. The ClonerAlliance Evolve looks to be an all-in-one solution by providing composite input and USB or MicroSD card recording. Anyone have thoughts on the ClonerAlliance products?

There's a better way to do this but will require working hardware. Get a composite to HDMI adapter and then and then a capture device with HDMI in. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZC5Zr3NC2PY

Excellent video! and learned some stuff along the way about nyquist-shannon & de-interlacing. Ive now bought the AV to HDMI and will see if I can output to the TV. then I'll buy one of these hdmi to USB adapters to use the old fashioned camcorder as a funky lo-res webcam.

Sorted!

There maybe an easier explanation for this problem. That is the Windows 10 Privacy settings may have not been set to allow OSB to access the AV TO USB2.0 Device.

Go to PC Settings/Privacy and choose Camera. Scroll down to 'Allow desktop apps to access your camera'. Set it to 'On'.

Yes, this was the issue for me as well. Check that this is set to Allow Apps to Access Camera. Once Checked, it appeared in the OBS list.
