Automatically detect capture card resolution change

Using a capture card and having set resolution for the source to "device default", the source stops working when the input resolution changes, but touching the resolution setting for the source to "reset" it gets it working again. This seems like an unnecessary step that could be handled automatically. I don't know if there's a reason not to?

Also preferably the source size would remain, so if I have set it to fit screen, it would remain so after the input resolution changes.
