Question / Help Audio works fine, but video is not captured in Game Capture during recording. (Black screen)

So, I'm brand new to this OBS software. Upon installing it, I went onto YouTube for some tutorials in order to get everything set up. I made sure I had the proper screen resolution, bitrate, etc. (I can go into further detail later on)

Basically, I'm recording videos of the game War Thunder, just, for leisure I guess. I did a short 2-minute clip just to test everything, and it worked... mostly. The audio came back beautifully with no issues at all, but the whole time, I have a black screen. So I can essentially hear everything that is going on, but there is no video to go with it. I don't know what to do.

Here is one of my latest log files: (sorry that it isn't in the proper code formatting, but it was the best I could do)

OBS has no built in way to check recordings, so you're probably using windows media player which is known for having abysmal media format support. (The Films and TV app in windows 10 is just a re-branded windows media player with the same problems with media format support)

Use VLC instead. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Also, it's not recommended to save directly to mp4.

Ok, I can give that a try. What format should I be saving to then? .mov?

flv ideally, mkv if you need multi-track audio.
They survive a lot better than mp4 if they aren't finalized properly since all the important parts of the file are written first (where mp4 has them written last)

Well, thankfully .flv is supported by YT, so I can definitely use that. I may or may not add one piece of music to it on the occasion.
But as for the black screen issue, will this VLC help with that? Or is it something wrong with my settings in OBS?

The problem is likely the windows media player format support thing.
Try watching your recordings in VLC.

No, though I'm not sure how one would "disable" WMP short of uninstalling it, which can cause other problems. Just use a better media player.

Hello, i just wanted to say that it seems i'm having the same issues as ColonelKlink.
I have noticed that my preview window is also black, no image is displayed during recording or otherwise.
I have tried using VLC as was suggested here, to no result. Since the preview window was not displaying any image I imagined so though.
I also noticed this only happens with Game Capture. If i use window capture i can see video in the preview window, although i cant select a game window.
I'm just testing the software for now, trying to make some captures of Fallout 4.
I'll upload my logs (Tried but the site took forever to make the upload for some reason)

Sorry if i'm posting in the wrong place for some reason.

I have yet to see if VLC works for me. But yeah, initially I used the unregistered version of Bandicam. I had issues with the video and audio, so I simply updated the capture cards and voila! I got perfect audio and video in an instant. If this issue persists, I may have to return to that one. Aside from these forums, I've tried YT tutorials, which haven't been of any help thus far either.

Best of luck to you, if you manage to get it working, let me know.

I tried tomake arecording using display capture and it worked perfectly, but i would very much like to see game recording working. I`ll wait for the response.

Both myself and Iberlos are still encountering issues, even after using VLC. I checked my recordings using the VLC, and I still get a black screen, but all of the audio comes back in perfect shape. I'll keep trying a bit more, even delving into a few YT tutorials again, otherwise, I don't know what else to do about it.

I have a solution. Do not use OBS Studio, use OBS Classic instead.
Here is also a link to the video in which will show you the proper settings for OBS Classic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYdczAfvxMo
Follow everything that he says, it worked for me. You'll need to use "Monitor Capture", not "Game Capture", strange. If you don't want to see your monitor screen before clicking your game window, set some hotkeys to be able to start and stop recording. (Personally, I use R for start/stop, it works quite well.)
Anything else that troubles you, feel free to ask.

So you want to recommend people go with a program that is no longer being updated or developed in any way?

Try to enable Multi-adapter Compatibility option in 'Game Capture' properties or make OBS Studio render itself to the nvidia card. Some old info applicable: https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/laptop-black-screen-when-capturing-read-here-first.5965/

It seems either enabling Multi-adapter Compatibility or making OBS studio be processed by my video processor card solved the problem,at least for now. thanks!

When i said i used window Capture In OBS Studio,it worked fine until I stressed the system a little. The image sometimes just freezes. I don`t think this is a good solution Klink.
Since the fix above solved the problem for now ill go with OBS studio.
