Audio / video problem importing from capture device(s)

I am attempting to copy video from VCR using either USB or firewire devices. I have two other software packages that are able to see both inputs; ffmpeg and Pinnacle Studio (I'm using the Pinnacle 510 A/D device to convert to USB). I also have a Sony DV camera that I am using to convert the analog video to firewire (DV format). Ffmpeg reads the signals, but drops too many frames, and the Pinnacle software is happy with either input, but only outputs to MPEG2, which requires a recompress step to get to a more efficient smaller file. I would really like to get OBS to work in this project, as it will convert directly to MP4 and it also allows me to use the software proc amp to make color and level adjustments on the fly in one go. What I am getting is a good picture from the USB input, but no sound. OBS does not see the firewire input at all. The audio mixer shows both capture devices, but no signal is present. I know the Pinnacle box and the Sony DV camera are passing good picture and sound, as it comes through just fine with the other software. What can I do to get this to work?
