Question / Help Audio out records at a low volume, need suggestions

I'm using 64-bit OBS 19.0.3 on my 64-bit Windows 10 laptop, and I want to use Display Capture to record Skype music lessons while wearing headphones (plugged into the basic headphone jack).

OBS captures my mic audio no problem, but the audio that goes to my headphones (default and only playback device = Speaker/Headphone: Realtek High Definition Audio) is recorded at a supremely low volume. I notice that if i increase my computer's volume, then the output volume also gets recorded at a higher level, but increasing the volume to a reasonable recording level also makes it too loud for me to listen with headphones! Alternatively, I could turn the Mic/Aux volume on the OBS mixer way down, but then I have to pump my computer volume up again to unusually high levels in order to hear anything in the output file.

Are there any other suggestions for how to best record in this way?

Did you try a gain filter?

  1. Right click the source
  2. Go to filters
  3. Add a gain filter
  4. Increase the decibel level as appropriate

Ah, thanks. It requires a lot of gain, but that's a better workaround than the other options.
You can also try installing Virtual Audio Cable (free one gives your one extra audio port), this will allow you to output Skype voice directly into a synthetic audio port. You can then choose to listen to the output of that by going into the recording tab (right click speakers > Recording > right click on Virtual Audio Cable > Properties > Listen > Check Listen to this device and choose your headphones as the playback device > Apply and OK all the changes).

This allows you to up the volume in the virtual audio cable to max (100), which you add as an audio source in OBS and then you can listen in through your headphones whilst also being able to adjust the volume in your headphones, which won't affect the volume in OBS.

If you are not sure still just ask.
