Audio and video sync issues after editing a recording

I'm new to OBS, but have so far been loving it. I've had great luck recording gaming footage through an HDMI capture card and using the Output Timer to stop the recording automatically whenever I inevitably forget to. Everything records great and playback is smooth...until I go to edit the recording.

After trimming the recording, clipping out sections in the middle and exporting a new clip, the audio and video get out of sync AFTER the sections that get trimmed out (before the trimmed sections is fine). It's almost like the video gets trimmed, but the audio doesn't.

I've tried recording in different formats, using different editors (Quicktime and Shotcut) and exporting in different formats and every time it's the same. I've previously recorded directly through Quicktime using the same method and editing in the same way and not had an issue. It's only when I record videos through OBS.

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on here? I've tried searching the forums a bit, but it's such a specific issue that it's hard to find any relevant results. Any help anyone could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!

QuickTime/Preview edits mess things up in the way you describe (been like that for years).

Final Cut Pro is fine.

Can't speak for QuickTime, but I do use Shotcut a lot, and it doesn't do that for me. I do have to remember though, if I've separated the video and audio tracks of a given source, to manually cut the same amount from both to keep them in sync. Just like physical film and tape editing needs both to be done separately and by the same amount in the same place.

There are some tricks to make sure that you actually do get *exactly* the same amount in *exactly* the same place, but you still have to do it explicitly if you have them separate. Might that be your problem?

I record my audio/video independently of OBS and QuickTime/Preview still messes up the a/v sync when cutting as the OP describes.

It’s not an OBS-specific issue.
