ASUS NUC 14 Essential with Intel Core 3 N355 hardware encode?

Hi. I'm considering using an ASUS NUC 14 Essential with Intel Core 3 N355 CPU, 16GB RAM, and fast 512GB NVMe SSD, for running OBS Studio and Nginx web server with RTMP and SSL on Debian-based Linux, sending one live stream _directly_ to the World Wide Web with about 20 simultaneous logged-in users. (1) Do you think this will work reasonably well? (2) Will OBS Studio use hardware video encoding in that CPU?

I find a lot of benchmark reports on that CPU, and descriptions of its video Hardware, but I'm not techie enough to understand what those numbers mean regarding this particular application I have in mind.

Thanks for any thoughts, including anything as basic as a reference to an already-published article.

Google says that's a mini PC. I would expect the same problem as a laptop: thermal management.

The published specs are only for a short time. Then it needs to stop and cool down. it's meant to load something quickly and be done for a while. Live media production doesn't allow that.

If it only needs to be out of the way, then you can do a lot with a small-ish desktop motherboard and a custom case. How's your carpentry skills?

If it needs to be portable, then you can put a desktop system on a cart. Or, you can look at the "Mobile Workstation" class of laptop. Those are thick and heavy because they have an actual cooling system that CAN keep up with the full specs indefinitely, and they're a bit more expensive because most people want something thin and light instead.

  1. Performance: The Intel Core 3 N305 CPU is entry-level and may struggle with OBS encoding and streaming, especially for 20+ simultaneous users. It might work for 720p streaming, but 1080p will likely be too demanding.
  2. Hardware Encoding: The CPU supports Intel Quick Sync, so OBS can use hardware encoding (via Quick Sync H.264 in settings). This will help, but the CPU’s limited power may still bottleneck performance.
For your use case, consider a more powerful NUC or a dedicated streaming setup. The NUC 14 Essential is better suited for lightweight tasks.
