Question / Help Are my settings ideal for 1080p/30 recording?

Hey there!

I'm just starting to stream but I'm wondering if these settings are ideal for 1080p/30fps recording. My OBS settings can be found in the Imgur gallery here: http://imgur.com/a/1M1wZ

What are your thoughts on the settings I'm using? Could something be improved that I'm missing? Regarding the target bitrate for VBR in recording, I tried 20000 before, but my rationale was "why not push it higher"? This might not be a good mindset to have...

My PC specs are:

- i5 3570k at 4.5ghz
- AMD Radeon HD 7950 (Gigabyte)
- Gigabyte Z77-UD5H
- Corsair cmz8gx3m2a1600c9b (2x4gb 1600mhz) RAM
- Samsung 840 256gb (boot drive)
- Seagate ST4000DM000 4TB

One question about my Seagate. Since it's 4TB, I had to partition it when I first bought the PC into two 2TB drives. All of my Steam games are saved on the D: drive, while my Twitch vods save to my E: drive (same HDD but different partitions). Since the game is running on one partition and the VOD is being saved to the other partition, is my HDD still bottlenecking my bitrate since it's 1 physical drive? I assume this is correct, since one physical drive can't spin like two drives lol.

Additionally, would it be better for me to record locally at 1080p/30fps or 720p/60fps? Obviously since I'm just starting out on Twitch, I'm not partnered, so I'm capped at 30fps, and in order to record locally at 60fps, I would need to run an instance of OBS. The other option is to not record locally at all, and use the Twitch VODs as the files that I can upload to Youtube. I'm assuming that this additional encoding step would result in a greater quality loss with the final product on Youtube?

I probably sound very foolish or inexperienced with what I've said and how I've said it. I am particularly lost when it comes to encoders.

If you could guide me in the right direction to achieve better recording results with my current hardware, that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

P.S. I have attached a log file in case there is something wrong with my hardware. :)

You should be using something like CRF or CQP to target a quality, not a bitrate.

Please forgive my ignorance Fenrir, but can you please explain what CRF and CQP are? I will do some googling shortly. Thank you for the quick response <3

There is a wonderful guide on high quality local recordings right here.

Thank you RytoEX! I'll try out some things (mainly changing whether or not I use CQP or VBR). When I use a preset, I'm not able to switch from CQP to VBR. Does that mean that I should stick with CQP? I know that TotalBiscuit uses VBR, so I want to do some testing with it.

One thing I don't understand - what are I-/P-/B-Frames?

Thanks so much! :D

So I've done a bunch of different tests with different quality settings and presets. Is there a concrete way to know which video looks the best, other than by simply subjectively eyeballing it?
