Hi guys, been using OBS Studio for 2years+ and never had any issue. Yesterday i streamed like normal, then i close my OBS after stream ended, shutdown PC and went to bed. Today, i want to start stream, after opened up OBS, all my profile, scenes, everything is gone. It appears like brand new installed software, it even asked me to auto-config my stream setting. My PC didn't crash, OBS didn't crash, suddenly all disappeared. Is there any solution? I have like 9 Scenes with 10 sources each. OMG.

This happens if you log in to Windows with a different Windows profile. This is when you log on with a different Windows user or Windows was unable to load the profile for the current user, so it creates a temporary one to show a default desktop instead of nothing. The latter might have happened for you. Log out, then log in again. If the error persists, contact Windows help.

my PC doesn't have other user profile and nobody ever touch my PC, so im logging in the main profile. Everything is here, all files, docs, etc, nothing's gone except this OBS all the sources n scenes. So, i dont think this is window's problem.

Look in the Scene collections menu of OBS and check if you accidently created a new scene collection. Your old scene collection might sill be there - it's an entry in the Scene Collection menu. Switch back to it.
If you don't have an added scene collection, use your file backup app and restore the files in %appdata%\obs-studio (which expands to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\obs-studio) . They might got broken somehow, so restoring the files will help. In case you have no backup, they're lost.

OMG OMG OMG you are my savior!! Turned out that i accidentally created new scene collection. All my scenes and sources is back now! Thank you so muuuuuchhhhhhhhh, i wish i can give u a hug, hahaha. Anyway, for prevention how do i backup all my entire scenes, source, hotkey, etc, everything? Just in case i need to reinstall windows or bad thing happens. I see there's Scene Collection > Export and Import, does it work? it copies everything?

You can use the export feature, yes, but I meant a real backup program. Many external USB drives come with backup apps, you can use the Windows built in File History, and there are many more backup programs out on the internet.

Consider your hard disk dies. All data on your PC or laptop just vanished. What will you do? For this case you need to be prepared. If you are not prepared, you lose everything.

ahh, so i need to use a 3rd party app? i thought i can go to FILE > SHOW PROFILE FOLDER and SHOW SETTING FOLDER then copy both of them to external drive, one day if i need to import it i just replace the folder to my brand new PC, is it possible to copy-paste those both folders only instead of using the export feature?

Yes, I mean 3rd party apps. Yes, you can copy the files within these folders. For restore, you copy the files back. This is what backup programs do. They scan your whole computer for files changed since the last backup and copy these to external medial. If you lose files, you can restore these from external media. On a disk failure, your OBS configuration is probably your smallest issue. A major issue would probably be all the data files you created, including all your recorded videos for example. A configuration can be made new within small time, but videos or other data are unique and cannot be made new.

Cloud storage and cloud sync such as Onedrive can be used as alternative to a backup solution, but many of these will only include data directories, not the configuration stuff found in the user profile - among them the OBS configuration.

When it comes to data backup you should use the 3,2, 1 rule

  • Have the data be in 3 locations (1 primary and 2 backups is fine)
  • Store the 2 backups on different media
  • Have at last 1 backup be offsite

to all looing scenes in recent update and to all up dfating first sdave sence and rember where you put themgo here if you have backed up senes or where you stored them and copy all your senes i lost a few recent ones but havemy main ones no found in other page on forum but here is solution

trying to salvage data in general from a failing Windows system drive, save the directory c:\users\<username> including subdirectories. This is called the user profile directory. If you didn't store elsewhere, all your created files are within this directory. All app settings and personalization are saved in a hidden directory c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming. OBS is storing its data in c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\obs-studio/basic is where mine where so once you found them just follow that file when importing suck i lost the ones i just made and did not back up but they were basic ones but

attention OBS
OBS please fix this updating nightmare where we loose our scenes
or give us a rollback option so this problem stops happening

My scenes won't show up and I also tried looking in Scene Collections and I haven't created one. Nothing is showing up and we are trying to stream at my church. Please Help. @koala

If this doesn't help go to Docs then select scenes. This will simply solve the problem.
