I'm Dave Plummer, retired Microsoft operating systems engineer from the MS-DOS and Windows 95 days, and... over Covid I started up a YouTube channel and have grown it to about 130K subs. That's not a large channel by any means, but it's a pretty narrow technical audience, so it's been a lot of work. I just started livestreaming, and decided to use OBS on Windows. I do everything else video-related on an M1 Mac, but I go back and forth all day. Happier under Windows, of course! Plus I get to stretch the legs of the Threadripper, at least a little.
In any event, I've written a lot of software and I've used a lot of software, and more importantly, having worked on Windows, I've debugged a lot of buggy apps. And I'm super impressed with OBS! Not only has it been entirely rock-solid, never crashing or failing once, I actually find it reasonably easy to understand and I daresay even intuitive. There are a few UI ideas I'd suggest get re-used from Adobe products (like rotating a window, perhaps, from its corner), but it's so close to exactly what I'd hoped that I dare not ask for more!
Anything that handles that much scaling, UI, and live video is enough to impress me!
Anyway, it's rare that I stumble across something so well done for the price (or well done period, to be fair), and I just wanted to shout out where the folks responsible might hear it!
When I went to the contributions page it made me think YouTube and others are already pretty much fully funding this project, or does it really need more funds? I'd like to help, but don't want to just throw cash at a YouTube-funded project, as their pockets are deeper than mine :-) But I have no idea!
Thanks!
Dave
PS: I think I accidentally went live AFTER I had clicked both "Stop Streaming" in OBS and "End Stream" in YouTube. The next morning I found I was streaming a feed of my toolbox! But it appeared to start at 2:30, when I wasn't even there, so I'm confused on that one!
