It's such a pain to do thumbnails in OBS. I hate having to convert my thumbnails from PNG to JPEG; even the easiest way possible, which is right clicking on the PNG and using XnShell to convert it to JPEG, it's still a royal pain the disrupts my workflow and is not fun; I still have to rename the stupid screenshot JPEG to `Thumbnail.jpg` because it's too much of a pain to copy the screenshot to `Thumbnail.png` then convert that to JPEG in order to use the thumbnail in my scene set, which really helps my intro quality. It would fix everything is we could just use the last screenshot in the recording output folder as either my YouTube/Twitch/etc thumbnail when I click Manage Broadcast, and also if I could do the same for any image source using a checkbox in the Image Source Properties. It's just ridiculous that I even have to convert the PNG to JPEG in the first place, OBS should do this automatically for files over 2MB.
Currently there are checkboxes that have "Unload images when not showing" and "Apply alpha in linear space", so adding this checkbox would not change the interface design, it would only add one checkbox. For Manage Broadcast settings, we would would have to add the checkbox to the right of the thumbnail where there is all that dead space, but it would share the same checkbox only with one additional horizontal layout box. We may either want to move the Clear button to the right of the thumbnail bellow the checkbox and make the button disappear when the "Use last screenshot" checkbox is enabled, but making it disappear probably would not help.
What would help is to add list of apps we could open the image in, such as GIMP or Affinity Photo. Ideally OBS should set the default quick image editor (i.e. MS Paint, Paint.NET) that opens fast, and the robust image editor such as Affinity Photo that loads slowly. Ideally we would also want to be able to select from a few images, such as my channel art or a multi-day mission for one of my projects that has the same thumbnail. This would be more involved project, but well worth the effort as it would save a lot of time for millions of users.
