A media file that plays normally in other players has no sound in OBS

Hi, I'm brand new to OBS and have an issue. I recorded a scene where I made text subtitles to a video played from a webpage. The mkv file that it made will play normally in VLC and Windows Media Player, but when I upload it back into an OBS scene it will not play sound. The media source audio bar is moving as if audio is playing, but there is nothing. I converted it to an MP4 file to see if it would make any difference, but the same thing happens. I feel like it's a setting in OBS but I don't know enough about it to address it on my own. Any help is appreciated!

You need to tell OBS where you want the audio to go. By default it is directed to the stream and recording.
If you want to hear it you need to rout it to the monitor/speakers.
With your video playing in OBS click the gear icon in the Mixer and go to advanced audio properties and you will find these settings.

I have a similar issue, and when I do as you said above, whenever the Media Source restarts, the "MONITOR" option is still selected, though the sound wont begin again until I click "SPEAKERS" then choose "MONITOR" again and it ONLY works WHILE the clip is playing. So by the time I have hit play and then gone in and fiddled with the settings, 5-10 secs of the clip has already been played, before I have sound again. (using to record vocals over soundtrack whilst filming on chroma key) Any suggestions on this? Cheers

To re-phrase what Harvey wrote
- Under your Source, (media file in this case) ->Advanced Audio properties, is a selection for Audio Monitoring - to Monitor, Output, or Monitor and Output. The default is Output (ie audio output ONLY to stream/recording). If you want to also hear the audio while its playing, you have to also Monitor

This is covered in the basic quickstart guide to OBS as well as
