Question / Help 4K Downscale Stuttering

Hello everyone,

I am really frustrated right now. After a long time I started streaming again like a week ago. Nothing has changed from my old setup except that I have a 4k monitor now. I started streaming Final Fantasy XIV again, which is a Fantasy MMO. It runs perfectly smooth in 4k. However if I play the game while streaming the framerate on stream is really choppy, while ingame everything runs smoothly at 60FPS. I tried a billion settings and none of them seem to work. As a viewer of my stream I would start getting headaches. :(

My current setup looks like this:

  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Monitor: ViewSonic VX2475 | 4K 3840 × 2160
  • Windows 10
My current streaming settings:

  • Upload: 3000-3500
  • Original: 3840 × 2160
  • Downscale: 1920 x 1080 (tried 720p, but its unwatchable and very blurry)
  • FPS: 48 or 60 (not a huge difference tbh)

My friends are also streaming FFXIV. Same PC, same internet connection, with the exception that their stream looks crisp and runs smoothly. We have compared each and every setting.
The only difference is that I am using a 4K Monitor, which makes me wonder if this may be the problem.
Here is a sample video file of me just randomly running around using skills in a crowded area.

Here is my log file.

Maybe you can help me out :)

Thanks guys

Lucas

dont use 48 fps

most probably 970 cant handle 4k game and obs well
post new log with streaming session after you check every step of this list

1. 60hz desktop refresh
2. 60 or 30 in obs
3. 60 in game if there is switch for it (like bf3, bf4, overwatch)
4. Enable vsync in game
5. Run obs as admin
6. Enable high performance mode in windows power options
7. On Win10 disable game mode, game bar and game DVR https://i.imgur.com/7CVH7c5.png
8. Make sure your gpu can do stable 60fps in game without being maxed. OBS needs some of gpu resources as well. If you enabled vsync@60 and its still maxed lower resolution and/or details.
(replace with 59,94 and 29,97 for 59,94 display like hdmi tv)
with 144hz monitor its fastest and most reliable to sacrifice 144 and follow 1,2,3,4
9. Install Afterburner (or pure RTSS+HW Info) to monitor cpu/gpu load and start experimenting with tuning resolution / fps / x264 preset. GPU/CPU load should not exceed 85-90%

Thank you very much for the quick reply. :) I did almost everything up to point 7 and will now try 8 - 10 and get back to you!

Sounds like there is a lot of stuff I never knew about could be optimised.

PS: Would it be wise to use adaptive vsync from nvidia instead of the ingame settings?

Nvidia adaptive vsync@ 60hz desktop refresh sounds good in theory, but behavior depends on game and can bug out / stutter. Not 100% reliable for stream / recording
test if you want

Alright I turn it on ingame then. Alot of people say its the more reliable solution for FFXIV

I realised now that 4k isnt the best idea after all. I scaled my game down to 2k. The colors look awful compared to 4k but I can get stable 60 fps now. I have to get used to it I guess.

yw. but 30fps? you should have 60 in game. maybe you have enabled adaptive vsync-half refresh in nvidia panel or limited it in rtss - afterburner?
