please expand on this.

Devices that have video, but no sound

Many capture devices, such as most USB-based ones use a separate device for audio, but full separate audio device support has been implemented, so just make sure that you select the proper setting for this in the properties for your capture card source.

I'm trying to stream with a usb 'Diamond VC500 One Touch Video Capture Device' but I don't understand what it means by "use a separate device for audio". I can just use amarecTV and which takes both the video and audio and screen region that but how do I just use the 'video capture device'?

It's in the source's properties, the source you added to the scene. Right click it, go to properties, and there should be an audio dropdown there if you want to add audio there.

'(use device audio)' outputs no audio and analog audio in makes neither audio nor video come through.

Well, did you try using "Analog Audio In (USB2.0 Video Capture)"?

I've admittedly never seen that device before, and the specific error code that it's returning is "Unspecified Error", so.. I admittedly am totally clueless about this device, and why it's failing, and windows is returning a very unusual and vague error code.

Well I've since restarted my computer and it is working with use audio device. maybe drivers weren't fully installed yet or some other program was eating the sound? Anyway no problem anymore. thanks for the help.

Ha. technology you fool me once...
Well when I opened obs and plugged it in, out put to desktop was set and sound was coming through the preview. It was a tad staticy so I switched to to stream only and started to stream. checked stream no audio. restarted obs and couldn't get audio out again. unplugged my device and when it was back in audio came out again in the preview. Without changing settings I went from preview to stream and audio stopped. most recent log http://pastebin.com/gruaQKAK

edit, looks to be the same problem as viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10213 ?

I have the same device 'Diamond VC500 One Touch Video Capture Device.' The audio problem sucks but here is my work-around. Open OBS and preview your stream like you normally would. You should see the video that is coming from the device and you should have audio as well. Next, you can hit 'Stop Preview' in OBS. When you hit 'Preview Stream' again, you should see video but your audio will stop playing. With OBS still open, next open EZGrabber. No video should appear but EzGrabber will have the device audio playing onto your desktop. When you hit 'Stop Preview and 'Start Streaming', your audio will stop playing. Next, close EZGrabber. After it closes, open EZGrabber again. Your audio should be coming through your desktop and your stream should have it as well. Hope this helps.
