Question / Help Suddenly can't start stream: Cannot initialize desktop audio

When I start or try to preview a stream, I get an Error pop up window saying:

Cannot initialize desktop audio sound, more info in the log file.


What log file? I don't see anything looking like a log file in the OBS folder.

OBS was working fine the last time I used it, and my sound is working fine.

Log files are stored in %APPDATA%\OBS, you can get to it through "Settings" > "Open Log Folder" in OBS.

Hmm several days no response from anyone and it still will not work.

I even uninstalled OBS and reinstalled it.

Try disallow exclusive mode in your sound options, or check for other programs using your card. That error code means the device is in use.

This is the same for the Razer and Realtek properties:




I haven't fiddled with anything in here.

And R1CH said to try and disallow exclusive mode, so untick the box that allows it.

Agreed, disable Exclusive Mode for the audio device.

I unchecked the top box which auto unchecked the bottom, for both the Razer and Realtek, and it still gives the message and closes OBS.

I then made Realtek the default and OBS started, switched to Razer and it did it, so it seems this Razer software that I installed for 7.1 surround for my Carachias headset doesn't like living with OBS.
