Question / Help Unable to write answer ASAP

So I opened up obs and this error message popped up: "Unable to write to C:/Users/jonph/Videos/Sounds2018-12-1721-36-30.mp4. Make sure you're using a recording path which your user account is allowed to write to and that there is sufficient disk space." I don't know why this is a problem as I haven't changed any permissions the last few days (I recorded yesterday last) and I have over 30 GB left on my disk. Any possible solutions?

First of all:
Thread titles with agressive demanding wording like "...answer ASAP" makes me want to ignore this question.
Sure, this is just the "internet", but being polite is still worthwhile.

Your problem seems to be more, than just writing to that folder...reading as well:
"CalculateFileHash: Failed to open file 'C:\Users\jonph\AppData\Roaming\obs-studio\updates\whatsnew.json"

Are you logged in to windows with exactly that user profile "C:/Users/jonph" or maybe with a different user (or just a slightly renamed version of that profile)?
Maybe you can change the properties of your OBS, to launch it with admin rights and double check the output path.
Maybe change the output path directly to "c:\" for testing.

Didn’t mean to write ASAP with capital letters, probably autocorrect

will try this later, when I have access to my computer.

I don't really care, if ASAP is written with capital letters or not, both variations are annoying.
After all, it doesn't seem to be that important and time relevant, when you don't have access to your computer at the moment.

Also delete your other threads. It's a no-go to keep creating new threads, when there is no answer for a few hours:

I will delete them. Weird that I can record to C:/ and nowhere else, and no, I'm not logged into a different user profile.
Sorry if I made you upset, I didn't mean to, I was frustrated and that's why I created several same threads

Seems that something messed up the windows security/rights settings on your user profile path, when recording to c:\ is working but c:\users\johnph is not.

How do I change permissions? I'm no computer expert - I tried changing my video folder location to C:/Program Files (x86)/Videos and I was able to record, so it's definitely a user profile permission problem.

Check the Windows Defender ransomware protection and allow obs32.exe and obs64.exe to write in your protected folders.

You could try this:
Navigate to C:\Users (the folder might be hidden, but can be accessed by typing in the path in the address field on top) right click on your profile folder (jonph) open the properties and then go to the security tab.
The usergroup "system" and the user group "administrators" should be listed there with full access, as well as your current user or the user group "creator owner".
If not, use the edit button to add users/groups to the permissions.

There is also a button "advanced" on the bottom. After clicking it, you can then force those new permissions to get applied on all subfolders (replace all child object permission...).

edit: Koala is right, it's also possible, that an anti-virus software is simply blocking the obs process to access those folders.

fyi: Windows Defender ransomware protection will prohibit any writing to protected directories, regardless of being administrator or not, and regardless of any ntfs permissions. It's really bulletproof write locked.

Protected by default are user's magic folders documents, pictures, videos, music. There is a one-time popup notification when an application tries to write and fails for the first time, but it's gone fast and most users ignore and forget the warning and just wonder why they are not allowed to write.

I know this post is 2 years old, but I had a simular issue. Posting because I fixed it, and want to help others who may run into this issue. In advance settings under recording path. Make sure there are no spaces before or after a "/" . So for example:

%CCYY-%MM-%DD Project_name /%CCYY-%MM-%DD %hh-%mm-%ss
The space after Project_name would create the error the original poster "Philip" made

This would be proper syntax
%CCYY-%MM-%DD Project_name/%CCYY-%MM-%DD %hh-%mm-%ss
Note that there is no space after "Project_name"
