Question / Help OBS audio completely cuts off after disconnecting earphones

Even cuts off mic volume. The volume meter stays frozen at whatever level it was when headphones was disconnected. Nothing seems to fix it aside from restarting the broadcast. Not sure if it's a bug or on my side.

My guess is that your computer is set to change your system's default audio device when earphones are plugged in or unplugged. Maybe try selecting your Destop Audio device and mic manually in Audio settings?

Are they USB headphones?

Yeah, I've had that happen while messing with my microphone settings (not levels, but 'listen to this device' and messing with the mic boost); could be switching sources, or OBS not dealing well with 'losing' its mic source (if it's a USB headset). Or if you're on a SoundMAX audio system, the AudioESP system (it's kind of hinky, and doesn't play well with others in its detection of sources added and removed).

@dodgepong; nope no luck. They're regular earphones. One thing to note is I don't have speakers installed but I don't know if that makes a difference.

@FerretBomb; no luck either. messed around with no mic at all, no 'listen to this device', same source, etc.
