Question / Help Black screen only showing pointer

Hi everyone,

I m having a issue with OBS
Yesterday, i started using OBS and followed a simple tutorial on youtube, and all went pretty well, i could do monitor captures normally, see my web cam etc. However, when i started using game capture of the game League of Legends, i only could see the pointer in game. I though it was strange since in the tutorial ->
, all went fine.

After that, I though that maybe closing OBS and opening it again could help. After doing that and rebooting my computer, I opened once again OBS and even when i tried to insert a monitor capture all i could see was my mouse pointer. Everything else was dark, no desktop, no nothing, just the pointer.
I dont know what could be, since it worked almost fine for the first time.

All the complains I see are about the graphic card. Since i m doing this on a laptop that has a graphic card integrated on the CPU, it could be an issue, yet it's really odd that I got image for the first time, and now I dont.

I have a windows 8 x64, i tried to use both 32-bit and 64-bit OBS running with/without admin rights

This is my log for the program using only 1 scene and in that scene, 1 monitor capture:

Ok, well you used Monitor Capture instead of Game Capture, so if you are playing LoL in fullscreen mode, that's why. Monitor Capture cannot capture fullscreen games, that's what Game Capture is for. Alternatively, play LoL in Borderless Window mode so that Monitor Capture will work.

I think i made my post a bit messy it seems :p

First use of OBS: all went fine except with the game capture, WHICH I TRIED WITH LoL and a whole bunch of other games, none of them worked (i did try to record a fullscreen LoL and a lot of other games with game capture, not monitor capture)

Second time and been happening until now: when i insert a monitor capture all that appears is my pointer and a black screen. neither monitor capture, nor game capture works. <- THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO FIX RIGHT NOW :)

Hope i explained my situation a little better :)

My post still applies. If you can't get Game Capture working for some reason, play LoL in windowed mode and use Monitor Capture. If you are already doing this, then we'll need to think about some other solution.

with monitor capture i always get a black screen no matter what! that's the main problem :) so i cant play anything at all since it only shows the pointer and a full black screen, always, no matter what.

it also shows a whole black screen for my desktop, always

Fullscreen mode, and i used game capture to try capturing the game, not the monitor one, and all that appeared was the pointer in game

Just to throw one thing in here, I don't know what kind of laptop you have, but if you are on an amd switchable graphics laptop, there's really no way to deal with this, you need to capture your games using window capture with 'compatibility mode' enabled.

having the exact same problem. There seems to be no permanent fix for this problem. For about the firs week everything was working fine until today. Hope someone comes up with a solution cause I've tried every so far and nothing seems to work. Ultimately i think i'm going to have to switch broadcasting software.

Your problem's easily fixed... You just have to tell your laptop which GPU to use for Open Broadcaster.

I'm running an MSI GT720 2PE, and I also had OpenBroadcaster set up and working normally... Then when I tried recording a tutorial a moment ago, all I got was black screen and and a mouse pointer in every capture (also shows up in the stream preview window if you're testing/troubleshooting.)

The tip that helped me figure it out is that on this laptop, the power button changes from white to orange when the nVidia GTX880's being used... and this happened every time I opened OpenBroadcaster... Quick visit to the nVidia control panel... Manage 3D settings, find "Open Broadcaster software (obs.exe)" in the list, then set it to use "Integrated Graphics" instead of the nVidia GPU. Boom. Desktop capture's working perfectly again.

You probably have to do the revese (ie. set it to the nVidia GPU) before you do a game-capture.

Because the problem still affects people, this thread is the top google search result, and no one actually posted a working solution yet. I'm sure the original poster doesn't care anymore, but the next person who googles for help might.

Well, it didn't work however.... at least not for me, it's still the exact same problem :(
